What is Enka?

Enka refers to songs influenced by Japanese traditional music, such as folk songs. It incorporates unique vocal techniques like kobushi that are characteristic of enka.

The lyrics often express emotions unique to the Japanese people, with themes such as duty, human kindness, romantic love, and the distinct characteristics of Japan’s regions.

What is Kayokyoku?

In modern times, kayokyoku is referred to as J-POP. It encompasses songs influenced by Western music and generally represents popular music enjoyed by the masses. In that sense, rock and enka can both be considered forms of kayokyoku.
