Hello, J-pop lovers! This is Melanie, Japanese vocal teacher at Honey Music School.
In this article, we are going to give you some useful techniques and tips for you to sing Japanese songs even though you’ve never learnt Japanese.
The song we’re going to learn in this article is called “Kimino shiranai monogatari’ by Supercell.
Techniques used in verse section : smooth singing & Articulation technique.
Let’s jump right into the verse section first.
There are three useful techniques you need to know in order to make the verse section sound amazing.
Smooth singing technique.
In the verse section, you need to sing smoothly and with an airy singing voice instead of singing with a powerful and tough voice.
To do so, you can imagine the long single line floating in the air while you sing the verse so that your singing voice sounds soft and smooth.
Articulation technique.
Let’s have a look at the verse below :
‘Akari mo nai michi wo’
“Kimino shiranai monogatari” by Supercell
When you sing this verse, you need to put an emphasis on each vowel in red.
Techniques used in verse 2 : Be aware of the new rhythm added and articulation.
Let’s move on to the next section. Although we are still in the verse sanction, there will be a slight difference between verse 1 and verse 2.
Be aware of the new rhythm added to the piano.
If you listen carefully to the rhythm patterns of piano in verse 2, you’ll notice new rhythms are added which sound quite rhythmical.
I want you to feel this rhythm, but still use the technique you’ve just learnt from verse 1 which is, you need to imagine a single long line floating in the air when singing to make your voice sound more airy and soft.
Articulation technique.
Let’s have a look at the verse below :
‘Oshi tsubu sare nai yo ni‘
“Kimino shiranai monogatari” by Supercell
When you sing this verse, you need to enunciate each vowel in each syllable.
Techniques used in Pre-chorus section: articulation technique and the use of modal voice and falsetto.
Now we’re in pre-chorus section which is quite short but has an essential techniques you need to remember before jumping right into the chorus section.
Articulation technique.
You need to put an emphasis on the vowel in red when you sing these two verse below :
‘Makkura na sekai kara miageta’

Get to know when you need to change your voice from chest voice to falsetto.
For those who don’t know what the chest voice and falsetto are, here is a brief definitions of those two.
- Chest voice : When you use your chest voice, you can feel the vibrations in your chest. It sounds really strong, tight, and connected.
- Falsetto : Falsetto is usually used when you sing higher notes than usual. It sounds airy, smooth and soft.
‘Hoshi ga furu yo de’
“Kimino shiranai monogatari” by Supercell
When you sing the verse above using only your chest voice, it’s gonna sound too strong and tight.
To make your singing voice sound a bit soft and airy, you may swap your chest voice to falsetto when it comes to the highest note : ‘furu‘.
Techniques used in chorus section : Get to know when you need to take a breath and the use of modal voice and falsetto.
Finally, we are going to sing the chorus section.
The techniques used in this section is quite normal and the ones we’ve already learnt in the previous sections : Get to know when you need to take a breath and swap your chest voice to falsetto.
