4 Points about Japanese Sound
Before we go into the song, I want to remind you of the way we pronounce the Japanese sound syllables. You can have a look at the “Easy to Pronounce Japanese Words ” picture above. This gives you the basic ideas of how to pronounce Japanese sound syllables when you sing Pretender.
First, each syllable always ends with a vowel with one exception. Second, each vowels have only one pronunciation. Third, each vowel consists of either one or consonant and vowel. Lastly, when you pronounce the consonant, you need to add the sound of the vowel. Japanese has five different vowels; A, I, U, E, O.
When we put the consonant in front of the vowel, we just make the sound of the consonant and add the sound of the vowel.
Lyrics and meanings
You can have a look at the inserted picture to check the meaning of the lyrics explained in English. As you can see from the lyrics, Pretender is not a happy song and it sounds a bit bitter and painful. This song describes the conflict between the feelings of wanting to stay with someone you’ve loved and you realizing that you are not supposed to stay with him/her.
There is one small reminder about the unique pronounciation technique. Looking in the lyrics, this section starts with “goodbye”. It is important to note that when you pronounce “goodbye (Gu-B-Ba-i)” in Japanese. It doesn’t sound like English “goodbye” because you need to pronounce an each vowel as a single syllable,
especially when you pronounce “B-Ba-i”, you are supposed to make a sound as two syllables (separating ‘a’ and ‘i’).
